He Tried to Fit—But Couldn’t
"Many of the students at the Calvary Bible Institute are older than the age we think of as students. James is in his 50s and was in my first-year class last fall. He was always a delight to talk with. However, the joy I see in him now has not always been there."

Prayer is Connection with God
"One of the greatest hindrances to our current prayer life is memory. Remembering what didn’t work out. We prayed, we received what we believed God was going to do about our request, we acted on it, but when we looked around it didn’t appear that anything happened. One thing I had to learn is that God doesn’t move on my imaginary time schedule—the answer to my prayer may be years away as easily as it may be immediate."

Jesus Brings Order to Chaos
"God is the God of second chances. And the third and fourth. When I share the stories of some of my students, it is to demonstrate the power of Jesus who is transforming their lives. C.S. Lewis said, You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending. None of them are proud of their past, but all of them are excited to share the difference Jesus is making."

Ministry for This Season
"Our walk with the Lord is a journey, sometimes in a straight line, but often with unexpected turns. All servants of God go through a process of arriving at the will of God for the expression of their ministry for that season in life. The Scriptures demonstrate a pattern of servants of God receiving a vision, which goes through a death of the vision when it looks like there is no way it will happen, then God comes through with supernatural provision and the vision happens."

God's Decrees
The questions that arise are such as “Did God decree sin?” “Will the ultimate will of God be done?” “What is the difference between an eternal purpose and a decree?” “Are there things God can’t do?”

Waiting Until the Mission is Clear
"The setting is the end of a brutal and bloody coup attempt. Absalom, David’s son, had declared himself king, betrayed his own father, and relentlessly pursued him with an army to kill him. It was a vicious battle that left over 20,000 men killed, including Absalom (2 Samuel 18). King David waited in the city gates for word from the battlefield, not so much if his kingdom was restored, but if his son was alive."

"I won't kill him"
"W e often take the power of the Word of God for granted, especially the Ten Commandments. The most powerful demonstration of that living power happened in the prison chapel at the Coffield Unit in Texas years ago. The church service had been normal that night with good attendance and good participation."

Calvary Bible Institute 2019 Graduation
As a teacher, working day-by day with students, one doesn’t always see if what they are doing makes a difference. It’s moments like this that make it worthwhile, if there were any doubts. There was a steady stream of students and ministers who are in the field who sought out Vernon to hug and thank him for how he blessed them.

A Recent Graduate
"I had the privilege of having Brett Hodges in several of my classes at the Calvary Bible Institute. He came to Calvary Commission from prison as a Believer who wanted to learn the Bible and how to serve the Lord Jesus. And he is doing both. For the past two years he has been in a leadership position, perhaps what we would call a dorm pastor. He is mature in the Lord and has a calling on his life that he willingly embraces. A big leap from where he was a few years ago."

The Blessing of a Pest
"The Mexican boll weevil started its destructive journey into Texas in 1891 and systematically destroyed crops as it traveled across the coastal states. It arrived in Coffee County Alabama in 1915 guaranteeing financial ruin to the farm community. In 1916 a resourceful businessman, H.M. Sessions, talked one of the distraught farmers, C. W. Baston, into planting peanuts instead of cotton. Sessions provided the seed, promised help with the harvest and a dollar per bushel."

His Name Means God with Us
"This year started like most in the past. Vernon driving the 100 miles to Calvary Commission each week to teach at the Bible Institute, researching and writing on his book drafts, Martha coaching and doing some writing. The usual activities of a normal life. By the end of April, classes were completed at Calvary Commission and final grades turned in for his students."
